There are a lot of controversial things that this blog advocates. Spear point collars, collar bars, high rise trousers, and white socks are just a few of those pieces! Whether you wear these things together or incorporate one, you end up with a cool vintage look that sets your sartorial game apart from everyone else. Now it’s time to talk about another addition to “Ethan’s Favorite Things”: the fair isle sweater vest.
For the past 3 years, I’ve worn a tuxedo on New Years. I’d like to say that December 31, 2016 was no different, but the truth is that I’m wearing a sweater and jeans as I write this. However, I was able to wear my black tie ensemble to a NYE Eve (December 30th) party at the Cicada Club in Downtown Los Angeles! There was dancing, drinks, and a myriad of well dressed people ranging from vintage enthusiasts, swing dancers, and Hollywood types. Here’s what we wore to the event! The last time I went into downtown Los Angeles, I shot some new friends and wore some classic menswear, ranging from ivy style to a modern interpretation of 1930’s tailoring. However, I decided to change things up this time. I thought I would be fun to show more of our casual side, this time even more dressed down than our previous post on vintage casual. Our plans for the Broad didn’t work out, so we were able to explore and shoot next door at the wonderfully photogenic Walt Disney Concert Hall.
It’s been a while since I’ve posted something on true vintage clothing! Luckily I was invited to a Christmas party hosted by Reese’s Vintage Pieces, so I was able to break out my Golden Era clothes and spend some time in style with friends, both new and old! You’ll be able to see some fantastic vintage tailoring, filled with subtle details and history that you just can’t get with modern clothing. They just don’t make them like this anymore, other than going full bespoke!
One’s a fantastic day spent with loved ones. The other is a day filled with demanding customers, long lines, and standing for 8 hours. Both times I dressed for comfort!
One of the cardinal rules of menswear is never to to mix black and brown, since the biggest mistake guys make is wearing a brown shoes with a black suit. But is that always the case?
I’m an LA native, but I don’t take advantage of it. I’ve been to LACMA and a few other cool spots, but never the Broad, which is right in Downtown LA near the Walt Disney Concert Hall and MOCA. Seeing as I had a free day with Anthony (who is originally from D.C and had never been to the West Coast), I decided to take him there to do some shooting and look at some fantastic artwork. Luckily, we were also joined by classic style enthusiasts Jacob and Nicholas. The resultant pictures were amazing.
Here it is, the long awaited documentation of style at Dapper Day! I usually take a lot of pictures, but this time I was a bit disappointing with the turn out. A few people actually didn’t want their pictures taken! But the people who did accepted enthusiastically. Expression of style and fun is the main reason I enjoy going to Dapper Day. So enjoy some of the great outfits that Anthony and I had the privilege of shooting!
Herringbone is a classic pattern that has been found on suits, jackets, shirts, and even ties. Dan Trepanier from Articles of Style wrote a great piece on it’s history. Being a classic pattern, it provides a great vintage look when found on a sport coat or suit! It’s been a while since we’ve done a “What We Wore This Week”, so here’s our latest entry with Spencer and I both wearing the pattern!
It may look like pretty vintage/1930’s in the picture above, but other than the tie, it’s all modern! I thought that it would be appropriate to finally write a post on how to dress in 1930-40s’s style in today’s time, making it easy to understand and without you having to buy too much “true vintage”!
